Vaccines Create Miracles!

2012 February 9

YOU can help protect children

from 4 of the most common and deadly

childhood diseases!

I am proud to say that I am a champion for the U.N. Foundation’s new campaign Shot@Life, which will immunize children in developing areas against pneumonia, rotavirus, measles and polio.

Together, these diseases cause 1 child to die every 20 seconds.

Today, 1 in 5 children around the world lacks the immunizations they need to be safe and stay well. The Shot@Life campaign will address this tragedy through its 3 aims:

  1. engage Americans in supporting continued federal funding for immunization efforts overseas

  2. spread the word about the importance of the Shot@Life campaign and rally others to the cause

  3. raise funds to get additional children immunized

Immunizing children in developing areas of the world is one of the most cost-effective ways to address extreme poverty and improve peace around the world. Here’s how it works.

When an immunized children get sick with one of the Big Four deadliest childhood diseases

  • rotavirus (which causes life-threatening diarrhea)

  • polio

  • measles

  • or pneumonia

parents are prevented from working or conducting other important household activities often leading to loss of income.

Families with sick children incur medical costs they are often unable to pay. Sometimes, they are unable to obtain medical care at all and children’s illnesses linger or result in deaths.

Sick children miss school – causing them to fall behind and sometimes even drop out because medical bills mean parents can no longer afford to send them to school.

Medical bills and loss of wages mean families’ economic status weakens as does the health of other family members because they have less income to acquire healthy foods to eat.

Economically stressed families sometimes become desperate for relief from their circumstances and are vulnerable to participating in movements causing civil unrest and even civil war.

Civil wars can destabilize international markets, results in thousands of local deaths and often require intervention by developed nations.

This is not an exaggeration of what happens when children get sick from preventable diseases. These diseases ravage children, families, entire communities and ultimately nations.

The amazing news is that we KNOW HOW TO STOP THIS VICIOUS CYCLE!

Bill Gates: Vaccines Can Save Lives

YOU can play a HUGE role in this campaign by

doing one or all of several things!

First, please sign the Shot@Life pledge, which demonstrates your support to our government for continuing to fund the immunization of children in developing areas.

Next, you can spread the word to your friends, family and colleagues to join the campaign to get kids immunized! Every single voice will count in making this campaign successful!

Finally, you can make a direct contribution or hold a Shot@Life fundraising event to insure that children receive the critical vaccines. Just $20 gets 1 child fully immunized.

And if all of the above doesn’t make you want to support the cause immediately, did it for this little guy, who deserves a shot at a healthy life.
